Motor Legal Expenses
A recent study undertaken by the Financial Conduct Authority (the body with responsibility for regulating financial and insurance related activity) found that whilst Legal Expenses are ‘useful’ for customers, there is an overall lack of understanding as to what they provide cover for.
This page is designed to provide additional information on some of the key benefits of our Motor Legal Expenses and dispel some of the myths.
What is a Legal Expenses policy?
Motor Legal Expenses packages together the services to enable you to recover uninsured losses and pursue legal rights following a road traffic accident from the at-fault driver. It also provides access to a legal helpline and representation for a driver being prosecuted for a motor related criminal offence.
Why is Motor Legal Expenses so important?
In April 2013, new legislation was passed, which means that if you do not have Motor Legal Expenses, any solicitor/law firm acting on your behalf, may enter into an agreement with you, whereby, they can take up to 25% of the damages awarded to you in the event of a personal injury claim and up to 50% for all other losses. Our Motor Legal Expenses ensures that no deductions will be taken from your or any passengers, settlement.
So is Legal Expenses just access to a policy?
No, our Motor Legal Expenses is sold to provide not only a policy but also access to a customer focused claims service, delivered by ALPS Legal Practice, to support you following a road traffic accident (see overleaf for further details).
We have worked extremely hard to ensure that our Motor Legal Expenses policy provides comprehensive cover for you and any passengers. Now you have more information regarding the importance of Motor Legal Expenses, here’s some detail on the level of protection afforded:
£100,000 Limit of Indemnity
The policy provides up to £100,000 of cover throughout the period of insurance.
EU Territory Cover

Motor Prosecution Defence

Motor Contract Disputes
Cover to pursue or defend legal action relating to a dispute over a contract relating to the sale or purchase of goods and services relating to the vehicle including the vehicle itself.
